Detachable magnifier for electrosurgical procedures

Electrosurgical procedures such ascauterization of small skin tags require good magnification. This is especially an issue in case of coexisting presbyopia.[1] Dermatologists often use magnifying loupes for the same, which can be cumbersome.[1] We describe the use of an easily available detachable magnifier attached to the tip of the cautery handle to allow better magnification.

   Solution Top

Small detachable magnifiers which are attached to scissors are used for tailoring purposes and are easily available online. We obtained such a magnifier online (Vardhman – Model number: paoakfe433, cost: 350 INR) and attached the same to a cautery handle end [Figure 1], [Figure 2], [Figure 3].

The modification helps to improve the ease of treating small lesions, without being cumbersome. The lens is very light and has a foldable hinge that helps to adjust the angle for the best view. The groove can be moved to adjust focus too [Video 1]. The device in the present form does have limitation, but at present we feel that there is proof of concept. The concept can definitely be improved in many ways—including the lighting and quality of the lens (making a larger lens, but without adding to the weight).
