“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” - Nelson Mandela.

The above quote pertinently refers to our beloved Professor Kariyappal Siddappa, who made the difference to the lives of the current generation of dermatologists in India.

Prof. K. Siddappa was born on April 5, 1931, in an agricultural family belonging to Kaginelli village in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. He was married to Smt. Manjula Siddappa and they were life partners in true sense.

He did LMP from Medical School, Bengaluru, in 1955. Later, he completed MBBS from R. G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata, in 1958. In 1961, he completed his D.V.D. from Grant Medical College, Mumbai. He completed M.D. (skin and VD) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 1965. In 1974, he had training in Sero-Diagnosis of Syphilis at National Institute of Health, Tokyo, Japan. His educational journey had a humble beginning as a village boy but ended in the capital of India.

He served as Assistant Surgeon in the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, Government of Karnataka, during 1958–1962. From 1962 to 1969, he served as Assistant Professor of Skin and STD at Medical College, Mysore, and Karnataka Medical College, Hubballi. In 1969, he joined the Department of Skin and STD at J. J. M. Medical College, Davanagere, as Associate Professor, and later became Head of the Department (1975–1993). He was instrumental in setting up a dermatology department of great repute at Davanagere. Following retirement, he continued as Professor Emeritus in the same department.

His grand rounds on every Wednesday between 9 am and 12 pm used to be the best learning experience for all the postgraduate students. He was a strict disciplinarian about time and commitment to patients. His passion for learning and teaching was commendable. Instilling academic interest among residents was the best quality he had. His camaraderie with other dermatologists all over India is well known. His students are proud to introduce themselves as his disciples.

His service to our specialty and association is well known. He was the national Secretary of IADVL and National IADVL President in 1990. He was the Project Director for the well-known and widely read “IADVL Textbook of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy,” and contributed the chapters: syphilis and nonvenereal treponematoses, skin in systemic disease, LGV, and sarcoidosis. Now, it has seen four editions and is the most widely read textbook on dermatology in India.

Till his last breath, he served the patients with updated knowledge. He believed in being the “best student of dermatology.” IADVL - Karnataka has instituted “Lifetime achievement award” in his name. The first such award was given at CUTICON, Bijapur [Figure 1]. He never missed any conference even with his ill health at the later part of life. The last conference he attended was CUTICON - KN 2015 held at Davanagere [Figure 2].

His contribution to Indian dermatology is exemplary. Probably, the current Indian dermatologists are reaping the harvest of efforts of yester-year dermatologists like Prof. Siddappa, who untiringly worked for IADVL and the specialty alike making it as most sought after subject.

His demise is an immense loss to IADVL Karnataka in particular and National IADVL at large.

“ When someone you follow becomes a memory, the memory becomes treasure.” Prof. Siddappa has left the treasure of knowledge and his passion for the subject and it shall guide us for the rest of life.

May his soul rest in peace.
