Using Transparent gridded sheets with pre-marked area zones for faster calculation of scalp area for various purposes

Calculation of the area of affected scalp in androgenetic alopecia is desirable before injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or another drug to optimize the amount injected per square centimeter area of affected scalp. In addition, before hair transplantation if recipient scalp area is calculated, it is easier to estimate the number of grafts to be harvested. In alopecia areata, for prognostic significance, area of patches needs to be calculated. Use of graph paper and different mobile applications has been described in literature by one of us. However, using graph paper is time-consuming and mobile applications are not compatible with every smart phone.

We took transparent sheets available in stationery store and marked the sheets with 1 cm2 grids with a permanent marker pen. Two squares of 100 cm2 and 50 cm2 were marked and shaded with different color pens. The grids cannot be easily wiped with the help of ink remover. The gridded sheet is placed over the desired scalp surface whose area is to be calculated [Figure 1]. Mark the boundaries of affected scalp surface over the transparent sheet on surface opposite to that of grid with the help of marker pen. Boundaries can be wiped easily without damage to grid as it is made on opposite side, which makes it reusable. Calculate the number of boxes that correspond to the area of affected scalp. Because of pre-made and color-shaded squares of 100 cm2 and 50 cm2, calculation of boxes is easy and faster. So, transparent gridded sheet is reusable, easily available, and fast method for calculation of scalp area [Figure 2]. The limitation of these calculation methods is that scalp areas are irregular and not perfect shapes. This technique can be used for other purposes also, for example, to calculate vitiligo area.
